AutoCAD 2026: Connected Support Files

With over three decades of evolution in computer-aided design (CAD), AutoCAD 2026 continues to impress with new enhancements that boost efficiency and empower users. The latest version now integrates flawlessly with Autodesk Construction Cloud, specifically Autodesk Docs. In this article, we'll explore Connected Support Files for Autodesk Docs users and how to configure them.

What are Connected Support Files?

Connected Support Files enable AutoCAD to locate essential dependencies, including fonts, plot styles, templates, and other support files, according to the configuration defined for an Autodesk Docs project. These files are project-aware and linked directly to the Autodesk Docs project they are associated with. As a result, AutoCAD can effortlessly find the necessary support files for drawings within a project in Autodesk Docs, eliminating the need to configure each AutoCAD installation individually.

When setting up support files for an Autodesk Docs project, AutoCAD creates a folder called .autodesk.support. This folder, along with its subfolders, serves as the initial location where AutoCAD searches for the necessary support files within the Autodesk Docs project. Additionally, you can extend this setup by adding other support file locations across multiple projects. You also have the option to include personalised locations and settings as needed.

Configure project-aware support files

You can set up the project when you open a drawing that is stored in an Autodesk Docs project that hasn't been configured for project-aware support files. To set up these support files, display the Options dialog box and click on the Files tab, then select Setup.

NEW and QNEW drawing templates

When creating a new drawing, AutoCAD uses the drawing template location specified in the project settings from your last session. If you last worked on a drawing that wasn't configured to use project-aware support files, AutoCAD will default to the drawing template location from your user profile. Additionally, support file searching is improved across all designated support file search paths within a project. Opening drawings from the same Autodesk Docs project automatically locates and includes the necessary support files, eliminating the need for any extra setup.

New system variables

A new system variable - PROJECTAWARE, has been introduced. It informs users and developers about the project path state of the current drawing.

Benefits

Now, let’s recap some of the benefits. In summary, Connected Support Files enable AutoCAD to locate dependencies, such as fonts, plot styles, templates, and other support files, based on the configuration defined for an Autodesk Docs project. These files are project-aware and linked directly to their respective Autodesk Docs projects. With this feature, AutoCAD can find the necessary support files for drawings in an Autodesk Docs project without requiring configuration for each individual AutoCAD installation.

This new feature offers several key benefits for teams working on drawings:

  1. Simplified configuration: AutoCAD automatically locates support files based on the project, eliminating the need for manual path configuration or profile switching.
  2. Consistent support file usage: All project members use the same approved support files, which reduces errors and inconsistencies.
  3. Improved collaboration: Teams can seamlessly work on drawings within different projects without the hassle of manually managing support files.
  4. Easier access to project-specific support files: AutoCAD can automatically locate the support files needed for the current drawing's project.
  5. Reduced administrative overhead: Project administrators can manage support files centrally, reducing the need for individual users to handle their own configurations.
  6. Improved version control: Connected Support Files ensure that everyone is always using the latest approved versions of support files.
